PAVEMENT PRESERVATION SERVICES:
CHIP SEAL (SURFACE TREATMENT)
A chip seal is a preventive maintenance treatment used to treat raveling, oxidized pavements and loss of friction. Chips seals can also be applied to seal top-down fatigue cracks less than 8mm in order to keep water from seeping into and weakening the road base. Once the chip seal emulsion is sprayed onto the roadway, chip seal aggregate, which can vary in size, is spread over the emulsion. This is followed by rolling and compaction. The aggregate helps to provide increased durability and resistance to moisture and heavy traffic, which can cause fatigue cracking and raveling. Chip seals can also be applied during the process of upgrading gravel roads to paved roads.
MICRO SURFACING
Conventional micro surfacing is a preventive maintenance and pavement repair treatment with standard 3% polymer modification of the asphalt base. It is used to treat oxidation and raveling, and can be applied to fill ruts. Conventional micro surfacing applications also result in increased surface friction, making road surfaces safer for drivers. This treatment extends the service life of roads 5-7 years. Additionally, it can be applied as the top layer/final course in a cape seal application.
CAPE SEAL
A cape seal is a road surface treatment that combines elements of chip sealing and either micro surfacing or slurry sealing. It involves the application of a layer of asphalt emulsion followed by a layer of aggregate chips. The combination of these two sealing techniques aims to provide enhanced durability, skid resistance, and overall pavement preservation. Cape sealing is employed to extend the lifespan of road surfaces by protecting them from the effects of weathering, traffic, and other environmental factors.
SLURRY SEAL
Wearing course follows conventional slurry seal design and application techniques with added polymer modification of the asphalt base, typically around 1.5%. Addresses loss of friction, raveling and oxidation with a life extension of 4-6 years.
FOG SEAL
A light application of emulsion sprayed on the roadway surface, providing a quick return-to-traffic time and improved aggregate retention with trackless properties. Typical uses are over new chip seals, rejuvenating scrub seals and existing pavement surfaces — resulting in increased service life of 2-4 years.
TACK COAT / BOND COAT
A trackless bond or tack coat is an application of emulsion or asphalt binder with trackless properties that is sprayed onto the roadway surface immediately prior to a paving operation. The trackless properties ensure the bonding material stays where it is needed, resisting being picked up by tires, paving equipment and haul trucks and tracked across the job site.
GRANULAR SEALING
Granular Sealing is a single application of either a specially formulated asphalt emulsion or a low-viscosity asphalt cutback. Their primary functions are to penetrate quickly into the granular surface and bind the material together, to partially waterproof the granular surface to prevent water erosion
